Many factors can cause a freezer to not get cold enough. Some of those problems you will be able to locate and correct yourself. Some problems, such as a loss of refrigerant or a clogged drier, will require the attention of a professional who is certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to work with refrigerants. If you suspect a loss of refrigerant because of visible damage to the hermetically sealed system, call an appliance repair technician right away.

- If your chest freezer isn’t cooling food as it should, you will need to undertake immediate repairs to ensure that food doesn’t spoil. Following a few steps will enable you to undertake an effective repair. Step 1 - Inspection. Begin the process of repairing a chest freezer that fails to cool food properly by examining the freezer to determine the cause.
Clean the Condenser Coils
One of the biggest causes for refrigerators or freezers failing to cool adequately is a dirty condenser. The condenser units have the hardest job, next to the motor-compressor, of all the components in the hermetically sealed refrigerant system. The condenser's job is to change the hot, compressed refrigerant gas into a liquid state, and in order to that, the condenser must be able to transfer the heat to its ambient environment. An accumulation of dirt hampers heat transfer. A dirty condenser also makes the system work harder and wastes energy. You should clean the condenser with a soft brush and a vacuum cleaner at least every six months.
Defective Thermostatic Switch
A defective thermostatic control is not as common a cause as dirty condensers, but thermostatic switches can go bad. Their internal contacts can become stuck in the open position, or they can lose their spring tension and open too quickly. The best way to test a thermostatic control is to bypass it and see if the freezer gets cold. To bypass the control, unplug the freezer, remove the control and jump across its terminals with a short piece of wire with alligator clips on each end. Plug the freezer back in, and if it gets cold, replace the control.
Check the Condenser Fan
Condenser fans are used on all freezers where the condensers are located inside the compressor compartment to force air through the coils. The condenser fan comes on every time the compressor starts up and runs throughout the compressor cycle. Many times dirt will get in the motor's bearing and prevents the fan from starting and running. If the fan does not start with the compressor, unplug the appliance and try turning the fan blade by hand. If it does not turn freely, try shooting some penetrating oil between the shaft and the bearings, and try running the fan again. The penetrating oil may cure the problem. If the fan turns freely, the motor windings may have become opened. You can take a continuity reading through them with a digital multimeter (DMM) or you can use a 110-V jumper cord to test the motor by attaching the clips to the motor leads and plugging the test cord into the wall outlet. If the fan runs, you have a break somewhere in the fan wiring circuit.
Other Problems
If after cleaning the condenser, checking the thermostatic control and the condenser fan motor the freezer still does not get cold enough, it is time to call the appliance technician because there is a problem in the hermetically sealed system. There may a leak and the system is low on refrigerant. There may be a restriction in the system due to a clogged drier-filter, there may be a clogged evaporator or condenser coil or a problem may have arisen with the compressor motor itself. All of these problems require an EPA-certified technician to repair.
